Cleaning is the heart and soul of conservation.  The top layers of darkened varnish as well as atmospheric grime from wood smoke or furnaces needs to be removed without disturbing the original paint below.  A delicate touch a knowledge of different solvents is essential.  See examples below of before and after photographs!
